TAYLOR MONTAGUE
Artist Statement
Each painting in this series, “Oblique Views of Suburbia,” explores the way coastal-suburban spaces are viewed/depicted and, by implication, inhabited. All the works are based on locations in and around familiar beach-town environs, which elicit a feeling of nostalgia for an oblique and transitory time. My goal is to defamiliarize the look of the everyday without losing it’s unassuming qualities, and to find interest in what would otherwise remain overlooked. Often observed firsthand, then later finished in the studio, these paintings aim for a balance of gestural indication and representational specificity.
