PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE |
George Billis Gallery is pleased to present “Oblique Views of Suburbia,” the gallery’s first solo exhibition of work by Taylor Montague. The exhibition features the artist's recent oil paintings and gouache paintings and continues through June 24th.
The artist writes of his work, “Each painting in this series, explores the way coastal-suburban spaces are viewed/depicted and, by implication, inhabited. All the works are based on locations in and around familiar beach-town environs, which elicit a feeling of nostalgia for an oblique and transitory time. My goal is to defamiliarize the look of the everyday without losing it’s unassuming qualities, and to find interest in what would otherwise remain overlooked. Often observed firsthand, then later finished in the studio, these paintings aim for a balance of gestural indication and representational specificity.”
Taylor Montague lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. He earned his MFA at the Laguna College of Art and Design and has exhibited throughout California.
