Artist Statement
Piero Spadaro paints closely in dialogue with the color field tradition. His work actively strikes a balance between deliberation and chance. Enlisting papers, glitter, and other detritus of yesteryear, he creates topographical maps allowing his fluid paints to flow over. Distinct divisions, or bands, are regularly seen within his paintings often layered, fleeting, and always relative to the allusion of a horizon.
Demure at times, but often flashy, Spadaro’s paintings are intended to dazzle. He composes his paintings in relation to the environment that surround the finished piece. He composes his paintings to react to their surroundings, to take on the existing light, and to project into the space. They simultaneously disrupt and integrate into their environment, much like social butterflies.
