PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE |
George Billis Gallery is pleased to present the gallery’s second solo exhibition of paintings by Michael Cutlip. The exhibition features the artist’s newest body of abstract collage work and continues through May 9th.
A multimedia artist with a self-proclaimed obsession with paper, Cutlip draws on the raw energy of urban life when crafting his mixed media works. Mixing found paper and paint on panels, the artist creates abstract compositions that highlight the juxtaposition of color, form, and texture.
The artist considers his practice in many ways to be self-taught. Heavily influenced by graffiti and street art, his works showcase metropolitan life as seen through an abstract lens. Representational associations fade away as thick layers of paper and paint come together in an effortless balance of color and texture. Conceived in both individual and multi-panel installation works, Cutlip’s collages reconstitute urban detritus into a vibrant reflection of our material environment.
Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Cutlip was exposed to art at young age by his mother, a writer and musician. He received his BA in Studio Art from California State University Hayward in 1999 and has exhibited throughout North America, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Chicago, and Vancouver, BC, and in 2014, he won the Alameda County Arts Commission Purchase Grant. His work is in numerous private, public, and corporate collections including Microsoft, Bloomingdales, Kaiser Permanente and the David & Lucile Packard Foundation. His work has been featured in the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara and is in singer/songwriter Sarah McLachlan’s private collection. Cutlip lives and works in Kona, Hawaii.
