Merge
In the Project Space
Bonita Helmer & Lauren Kasmer

December 1st, 2018 - January 5th, 2019
Opening Reception: Saturday, December 1st, 6-9pm

This project is created by two artists with two different disciplines who share the same principles in their work. Bonita Helmer's paintings are abstract references to physics and space. Lauren Kasmer's video installations reflect the natural world of the earth, as we know it.

In their individual explorations they find the same principles exist simultaneously in both arenas whether on our planet or in space. When the disciplines are merged some imagery remains fixed and others fade in and out imparting the concept that there is no difference between "here and there." Both artist's works are poetically and theoretically merged by the unseen universal structures founded in scientific research and metaphysics.

Bonita Helmer explores scientific theories of physics, astronomy, the inner and outer realms of existence, and the unseen elements of our universe in her paintings. Helmer’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and in 2014 Helmer was invited to be on the board of the Exploration Institute which brings together astronauts, physicists, underwater researchers and more. She is the only "visual explorer" in the group of 35 participants. Helmer began teaching at Otis College Art and Design in 1998 and continues to teach there present day. Helmer received her BA in painting, UCLA, Antioch.

Lauren Kasmer is an artist and curator native to Los Angeles, who continues to live, work, and be inspired by its qualities. Her multidisciplinary artwork is most often presented as installations combining a variety of media and layered, refractive processes such as photography, video, collaboration, sound, wearable design, furnishings, edibles, and performance, which are frequently accompanied by participatory events. Inspired by her studies with leaders of many disciplines, from progressive chefs to the mercurial master Robert Heinecken, she frequently references the belief that the process of creation begins with de-construction. As both a curator and exhibition organizer she has been responsible for decades of engaging, boundary-blurring displays in galleries, museums, and festivals as well as alternative and public spaces.
