LISA GOLIGHTLY: SPECTATOR
Opening Reception: Saturday, January 12th, 5 - 8pm January 12 - February 16, 2019 |
PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE |

George Billis Gallery is pleased to present Lisa Golightly: Spectator - the gallery’s first solo exhibition of works by the Portland-based, realist painter. The exhibition continues through February 16th.
Golightly’s initial focus was photography, the influence of which is apparent in her paintings. Her work revolves around memory and how snapshots shape, influence, change and even create memory.
Golightly starts all her paintings with a found photograph. “The photographs I’m drawn to are constantly changing based on what is happening in my own life. The images I select create a landscape of found memories that often have very real ties to my own experiences.” As a sort of spectator to other peoples’ experiences, the artist finds a freedom in not actually knowing the story behind the image or the people in them - thus allowing her the space to create a new narrative of her own.
Working with high gloss paint on aluminum, Golightly’s work is painterly and expressive: the blown-out, overexposed sun of the photo becomes textural white in the painted sky, the figures are captured in a few well placed strokes, her colors are saturated and pushed to the extreme edge of reality. Golightly’s work is both anonymous in nature but also very personal and connects the viewer to past memories of bygone eras.
Lisa Golightly received her BFA in studio art from the University of Arizona. Her work has appeared in exhibitions throughout the West Coast and Northeast and has appeared in Luxe Magazine, Huffington Post, Colorado House and Home Magazine, and The Wall Street Journal’s Art Guide, among others. She currently lives and works in Portland, Oregon.
