LINDSEY WARREN: Los Angeles Light
September 12 - October 10, 2020 |
PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE |
George Billis Gallery is pleased to present Los Angeles Light, Los Angeles native Lindsey Warren's first solo show with the gallery. In this recent body of work, Warren examines the urban and suburban landscapes of Los Angeles through the dramatic and fleeting light so unique to Southern California. The paintings pay homage to the epic breadth of Los Angeles from a variety of perspectives, creating a vibrant portrait of the sprawling city.
Lindsey's paintings focus on the urban landscape, using systematic processes, perception and memory to translate specific moments in time. Since returning to Los Angeles in 2015, Warren has been focusing on representing the magical light and diverse environments of the city and the resulting paintings are depictions of the viewpoints and neighborhoods that she frequents. She takes very few liberties with the architecture as these are intended to be portraits of places - true in their forms.
Warren's painting practice has also been informed by her mural work - she uses her deep understanding of built and natural landscapes to transform scenes into flat blocks of color, a process that transports viewers through the streets of Los Angeles. Warren uses a layering process in which she is constantly adding and subtracting visual elements and in so doing produces unique color experiences of a landscape that is simultaneously stylized and real. Her paintings leave a familiar impression, as if you too have visited the place Warren depicts, and her love of Los Angeles is evident in her words and paintings alike.
Lindsey Warren was born and raised in Los Angeles. She received her BFA (2004) and MFA (2008) in Painting from Boston University, and a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate from Brandeis University (Waltham, MA). Her work as been exhibited throughout the United States with recent shows in Los Angeles, New York City, and Laguna Beach. Lindsey has been a studio artist in Chashama’s Workspace Program in NYC and a participant in the Bronx Museum’s AIM program. Her public works and murals have been installed in Boston and New York City. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
