George Billis Gallery is pleased to present Re:Creation - the gallery’s first exhibition of photographic and multimedia works by Lauren Kasmer. The exhibition continues through January 5th.

Kasmer describes Re:Creation, "as curious human beings, we cannot help but ponder the question of how we come to be here. So while there are many traditions and beliefs that can separate us as humans, I prefer to look at where we share a commonality in our biology. Re:Creation is an ongoing project of mixed media, video and installation. It focuses on a relationship to nature while acknowledging a deep respect for physics as well as metaphysical tenets. Physicists, including Gerald Schroeder, as well as many ancient traditions propose that creation hasn’t stopped and is an ongoing process. I agree and express the belief that creation is an initiated action versus a completed one. I believe that we humans, animals, plants and minerals are no different than the stars - we are in flux and transition, and continuously in the actions of de-construction and re- construction."

Curator and artist Lauren Kasmer was born and raised in Los Angeles and received for BA from UCLA in 1979.  Her multidisciplinary artwork is most often presented as installations combining a variety of media and layered, refractive processes such as photography, video, collaboration, sound, wearable design, furnishings, edibles, and performance, which are frequently accompanied by participatory events. Inspired by her studies with leaders of many disciplines, from progressive chefs to the mercurial master Robert Heinecken, she frequently references the belief that the process of creation begins with de-construction.  As both a curator and exhibition organizer she has been responsible for decades of engaging, boundary-blurring displays in galleries, museums, and festivals as well as alternative and public spaces. She lives and works in Los Angeles and continues to be inspired by its qualities.
