September 13th - November 1, 2014 Artist Reception: Saturday, September 13th, 5 - 8pm |
PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE |
George Billis Gallery LA is pleased to present One More One, the gallery's first solo exhibition of paintings by Los Angeles artist Joan Tucker. The exhibition features the artist's recent abstract paintings and continues through November 1st.
Mixed media artist Joan Tucker uses and mis-uses the basic tenants of color, composition, and form to create richly textured canvases that are idiosyncratic and intriguing.
Tucker writes of her process, “When I begin a painting, whether it's on a blank canvas or one covered with old newspapers picked up in my travels, rice paper, pieces of paper bags or thick splashes of paint, I have only a germ of an idea. That idea can come from something I've seen...somewhere I've been...a feeling or just a thought. While my work is primarily abstract, a subject or story begins to reveal itself to me while I'm working. Often it is the "idea" that I started with, but just as often the painting goes in a whole different direction. The painting is waiting for me to discover it.”
Tucker was born in Detroit and received her BA from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Her work appears in public and private collections including NBC/Universal, Wells Fargo, Mandalay Bay Las Vegas, Gearhead Entertainment, and Supply & Demand Films among others. She lives and works in Los Angeles.
