PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE |
George Billis Gallery LA is pleased to present Disruptive Spirit, the gallery's first solo exhibition of paintings by Los Angeles artist Jennifer Joseph. The exhibition features the artist's recent colorful geometric abstract oil paintings and continues through October 12th.
Disruptive Spirit marks a radical shift in Jennifer Joseph’s work. The ordered linear and circular compositions and subtle color explorations she is known for have exploded into fractured jewel-toned geometries. The saturated color palette and angular graphic lines of the new work are at first glance in stark contrast to Joseph’s earlier more meditative work, however, upon further inspection, the history of Joseph’s mark-making becomes apparent in these new paintings - both literal and figurative. In some paintings, Joseph creates an ordered base painting and builds a new image over the linear and circular compositions. The raised textures of the underpainting are allowed to show through - these echos provide a literal foundation for the new explorations of form and color. In other paintings, these forms share the plane simultaneously - the ordered line work is splintered by angled lines and color fields.
The new series seeks to shake up and wake up the viewer - to take them on a journey. The artist is very actively depicting her experience of moving to Los Angeles - the fast-paced, noisy, gritty, complicated collage-like city she now calls home. The city inspired this looser, faster, more gestural way of working after many years of making slow, meditative paintings in the relative quietude of the high desert in New Mexico. The new paintings are a means of ordering the constant stream of information assaulting us daily here in this metropolis. For someone as intuitive and connected as Joseph, these paintings are a very visceral channeling of the artist’s experience of Los Angeles.
The quiet calm of the simpler compositions is activated by the riotous and joyful color explosions of the new body of work as seen in the large multi-panel groupings. For Joseph, color is very connected to mood and this new series is no exception - with the new series moving from a contemplative state to a new influx of energy and yet still creating color harmonies that vibrate in a new and innovative way.
Jennifer Joseph received her BFA from Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia, PA. Her paintings and site-specific installations have been exhibited internationally including solo exhibitions in Los Angeles, Santa Fe, and Tokyo. Her work is in numerous public and private collections and she is a three time recipient of the New Mexico Art in Public Places purchase award (2009, 2013, 2015). She lived in New Mexico for 26 years before relocating to California in 2017. She currently lives and works in downtown Los Angeles.
