HUNTZ LIU: New Paper Cuts
April 7 - May 12, 2018 Opening Reception: Saturday, April 7th, 5 - 8pm |
PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE |
George Billis Gallery LA is pleased to present Huntz Liu: New Paper Cuts, the gallery's first exhibition of works by the Los Angeles-based artist. The exhibition features the artist's recent layered cut paper works and continues through May 12.
Huntz Liu’s work is an excavation of sorts. With a straight edge and knife, he cuts and layers paper to expose geometric/abstract compositions. The comprised shapes sit on different planes, creating literal depth, while the composition itself creates perceived depth. It is this intersection of the literal and perceived that informs the work; where the absence of material reveal form and the casting of shadows create line.
Liu writes of his work, “Recently, I have been further exploring the collision between imaginary space and real space: shadows that cast shadow / extruding shapes that recede like a sunken relief / sliced shapes formed by cut material.
Liu received his BFA from the Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY, in 2003. His work has been exhibited in New York, Houston, Portland, OR, and throughout Southern California. He lives and works in Los Angeles.
