DEREK BUCKNER: EXPANSES
January 10 - February 14, 2015 Artist Reception: Saturday, January 10, 5 - 8pm |
PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE |
George Billis Gallery Los Angeles is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Derek Buckner. The exhibition, Expanses, will run from January 10 - February 12, 2015. The gallery will host an opening reception for the artist on Saturday, January 10th, from 5pm to 8pm.
In Derek Buckner's most recent exhibition Expanses, the artist focuses his eye toward the sky. Buckner explores the idea of scale and the individual's relationship to the vastness of his surroundings.
It's ambiguous in these paintings whether we're meant to see humans as isolated and insignificant or to rejoice in the majesty of nature. In the large canvas Discovery, we see a boy walking on a barren landscape of rocks with a clearing storm looming overhead. Though beautiful, the image is simultaneously haunting and leaves the viewer wondering why this boy is alone in such a barren environment. Similarly unsettling is the painting Descending in which a parachuting business-suited man is dwarfed by a looming thunderhead cloud.
Derek Buckner's most recent paintings include a sly narrative expression at which he's previously only hinted. With his signature expressive brushwork and mastery of light, this series offers a striking--and often surprising--point of view.
Born in 1970, Derek Buckner BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago. He has exhibited internationally and his work has been featured in The New York Times, LA Times, and The New Yorker, among others. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn.
