George Billis Gallery Los Angeles is pleased to announce Daniel Dens’ first solo show with the gallery. The exhibition of his new work will open with an artist reception on March 4th from 5-8 pm and run through April 1st, 2017.
Daniel Dens’ work juxtaposes iconic images from history and pop culture on large silk-screened canvases. Images of celebrities, political figures, and albums are layered against news articles and type, creating compositions that reflect a sensationalized vision of the world. These brightly colored layered works reimagine famous images in a dynamic and unique composition.
The work has evolved over 12 years into flashbacks of modern history which express his interest in music, fame, and pop culture. Each piece becomes a story as the selected elements are realized on canvas. Bits of color and texture from previous layers are exposed to create intense contrasts.
Dens is a self-taught artist from Belgium. He moved to Venice, California in 2002, and began creating mixed-media pieces. For the past 10 years, he worked in New York City refining his technique to create high quality silkscreen paintings and sculptures. Dens' has exhibited extensively in New York and Europe . Dens’ studio is currently in Ventura, California.
