May 20th - June 24th, 2017 Artist Reception: Saturday, May 20th, 5 - 8pm |
PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE |

George Billis Gallery is pleased to present “Echo & Line” the gallery’s fourth solo exhibition of work by Bryan Ida. The exhibition features the artist's recent work and continues through December 20th.
Ida's new multi-layered resin and acrylic abstract works explore the nature of memory and time in a symbolic landscape. By identifying his experiences with images reduced to essential shapes, hard lines, and color fields, Ida builds a layered composition of emotional echos in time. The shapes overlap and vibrate on the panel with an almost musical feel which parallels the artists background in music composition.
The artist writes of his work, “Memories are like echos as they fade with time. They are the reduction and refinement of an original experience that has been enhanced with emotional content and value. I identify these experiences with images that come to represent a place and time in our personal history. I try to collect and assemble the assortment of impressions and distill their essence transforming the elements into layers of form, composition, and color.”
“In nature there are no perfectly straight lines they are the constructs of our desire to comprehend. Perfect lines are the idealization of the concept of no curvature which cannot exist outside the mind; it is an attempt to reach for the unattainable. Lines as we represent them define our wonderful imperfections and symbolize the paradoxical idea of perfection existing in an imperfect world.”
Ida has shown throughout the US as well as in Japan, Korea, Italy, and Taiwan. He was a studio assistant to the late abstract expressionist painter and printmaker Sam Francis and has been published in Artweek and Ions Noetic Sciences and is a member of MENSA. Ida lives and works in Los Angeles.
