BRYAN IDA: REMNANTS
November 8th - December 20th, 2014 Artist Reception: Saturday, November 8th, 5 - 8pm |
PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE |

George Billis Gallery LA is pleased to present ‘Remnants,’ the gallery's third solo exhibition of paintings by Los Angeles artist Bryan Ida. The exhibition features the artist's recent layered acrylic works and continues through December 20th.
Ida's multi-layered resin and acrylic abstract works are inspired by his travels around California; his memories of the different spaces inform his color and shape choices. The artist reduces the buildings and their surroundings to their essential shapes - leaving us with an abstracted cityscape comprised of hard-lined, graphic shapes floating over clouds, fog or color fields. His new body of work also features dissected and abstracted interiors with more intimate feeling compositions. The shapes overlap and vibrate on the panel with an almost musical feel which parallels the artists background in music composition. The artist writes about his process: “I like to build a surface and earn its effect. A hard won battle with color and composition. To me painting is about creating problems, not solving them. Pushing to find the base element within the realm of an aesthetic. As I see it everywhere you look is exciting, it’s the process of looking that is the adventure.”
Ida has shown throughout the US as well as in Japan, Korea, Italy, and Taiwan. He was a studio assistant to the late abstract expressionist painter and printmaker Sam Francis and has been published in Artweek and Ions Noetic Sciences and is a member of MENSA. Ida lives and works in Los Angeles.
