MARCH 31 - MAY 5, 2012 Artist Reception: Saturday, March 31st, 5 - 8pm |
PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE |
George Billis Gallery is pleased to present the gallery's first solo exhibition of work by Brooks Salzwedel. The exhibition features the artist's recent resin drawings and continues through May 4th.
Salzwedel's delicate and subtle landscapes reflect the friction between urban development and nature. Even his medium of choice is a statement of this clash, despite being a natural product (resin is the hydrocarbon secretion from plant), the actual hand layering process is considered very toxic and even dangerous when in liquid state. With this painstaking process, Salzwedel is able to accomplish incredibly ethereal artworks with a sense of depth.
His most recent body of work focuses on Turn of the Century bridges (1890-1914) many in mid-constuction. From New York's East River Bridge, to the Fourth on Firth Bridge in Scotland to the Sixth bridge in Los Angeles. They capture a moment as if civilization had suddenly abandoned these cities leaving behind the decrepit construction of bridges now overgrown with foliage and old trees, as nature had originally intended. Some of the structures are misplaced in their setting, The los Angeles Sixth Street bridge sits high amongst tree tops of a Southern California mountain range and The Scottish Fourth on Firth lays unmanned in snow covered hills.
"Salzwedel makes landscapes for a world in which nature is under siege. Still, that doesn't mean his pictures appear post-apocalyptic. They are beautiful in a bittersweet way, the dark trunks and branches looking tapestry-like within their resin-coated surfaces. The mood is autumnal." - Robert L. Pincus, Art Critic, San Diego Union-Tribune
Brooks Salzwedel graduated with distinction from Art Center College of Design in 2004. His work can be seen in magazines such as Juxtapoz, ArtReview, New Angels, and NY Arts. His work has been commissioned by many including the Four Seasons hotel in Washington, DC. In addition to his flourishing art practice, Brooks is also the designer and producer of an award winning line of belt buckles, Shane Belt Buckles, featured in Los Angeles Magazine's 2006 Best of Issue.
