PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE |
George Billis Gallery is pleased to present Everything Else: Recent Paintings by Barbara Strasen, the gallery’s fifth solo show of the Los Angeles-based artist’s work. Everything Else features Strasen’s recent body of mixed-media paintings and continues through January 4th.
Barbara Strasen’s paintings walk the fine line between order and chaos. In many ways, her work seeks to make sense of the inexplicable - it is about looking for ways to depict the disordered world in which we find ourselves. Her layering process utilizes seemingly diametrically opposed images to create visual harmonies: fabric scrolls and Albrecht Dürer’s clouds, frosted donuts and scattered intestines, birds and neurons. In viewing Strasen’s work, disparate images become juxtaposed, revealing a congruence and commonality between them.
In Everything Else, rolling abstracted fields of paint are punctuated by playful silhouettes of animals protruding from the surface - reminiscent of the meme-esque imagery of contemporary digital culture. The comic and serious walk comfortably hand-in-hand in Strasen’s new paintings. The work exists on a razor’s edge - a perfect balance between smart and humorous, mundane and highbrow, witty and poignant. We live in a state of contradictory emotions and experiences, and Strasen’s work seeks to make visual these complexities of modern life.
Strasen’s original artistic medium was painting, which has over time expanded to include digital artworks, installations, and lenticular works. The result has been an array of work, from gallery-sized paintings, to prints and singular artworks, to large-scale installations for a building lobby and an airport terminal. Strasen continues to push the boundaries of painting, photography, printmaking, and mixed media to create multi-image works that reflect upon these layered complexities.
Barbara Strasen received her MFA from the University of California at Berkeley and has exhibited extensively in museums and galleries across the USA and Europe. Her work has been shown in the Long Beach Museum of Art, the University of Southern California, MoMA P.S.1, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Flash Art Museum, as well as many other institutions. Strasen has been featured in the Los Angeles Times, Artweek Magazine, the New York Times, Los Angeles Weekly, Artcore, and several other publications. Her work can be found in a number of public and private collections. Strasen lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
