Artist Statement
Nature in an abstracted or reflected state has always been an inspiration for me—from vast oceans and rapid streams to mystical forests. Such scenes often evoke powerful, emotionally charged memories or sensibilities that I hope to elicit in the viewer while being open to interpretation.
The paintings in my current exhibition, “Other Shores,” incorporate rhythmic lines and gestures to create the illusion of light on an ethereal liquid landscape. This is achieved in an almost meditative state starting with intuitive, mark-making or loose sketches that are built up with layers of color only to be obscured in a veil of white. Through a physically intense sanding process that resembles excavation, the initial composition eventually emerges with an almost sculptural depth that ultimately reflects the contrast between color and composition; physical form and poetic experience.
The title of this show specifically refers to an ongoing voyage balanced between fear of the unknown and the desire to explore “other shores.” That tension, sometimes literal, sometimes metaphorical, often resembles balancing the composition of a painting with moments of serenity punctuated by bursts of energy. And whether in life or art, both require a certain level of navigation and innate trust.
