_As
a resident of the West Village in Manhattan, I am fascinated with the
beauty of the aging brownstones and their elaborate iron railings. My
art captures the beauty of early 19th century New York, exploring the
extraordinary interaction of the urban streetscape with the changing
daylight.
On a thematic level, these works depict the passing of time. The stoops themselves represent to me the ruins of our aging city. The ravages of time have left them paradoxically both compromised and enhanced. The passing of time reveals itself in the color of rust and peeling paint. In some railings, decorative iron components have disappeared, leaving only a negative space behind.
In several paintings, time is captured in a fleeting moment. In my stoop shadow series, light rakes through the railings, revealing their beauty only through their shadows, cascading from step to step. Shadows transform quickly with each minute of the day and more gradually as the seasons change.
The purpose of my work is to share with others the visual joy that surrounds me everyday. Ideally, my work will help enhance your perceptions and transform the ordinary streetscapes into a symphony of design, light, and color.
