Curator's Statement
RIDE THE WAVE• 8 WOMEN ARTISTS is a Summer Group Exhibition that highlights 8 women painters from six different states, eight different styles and stages in their careers, mid-career to established. The work selected from these artists supports the idea of riding the current tidal wave into a new and brighter period in our world, inspired by hope coming out of the storm.
It was important to choose women artists that had different backgrounds, approaches and styles but to also show solidarity in their commitment to their work and careers. While the mediums, processes and ideas behind the work vary, the artists are connected in this place in history through the proverbial, Tides Rise All Boats, which is the foundation of RIDE THE WAVE.
Nothing depicts the idea of a lightness and freshness coming out of the storm than summer, especially in our world now. Woven fabric, crane paper designed by colorful watermarks, gestural and colorful oil, acrylic and mixed media on canvas, paper and surfboards present a new wave of hope through sophisticated abstract, figurative and sculptural images. Steeped in symbolism as opposed to the idea of coastal cliché, these artists convey color combinations and bold processes to lessen the seriousness of events and yield a positive transformation that is happening now.
This exhibition invites the viewer to reflect on the joyful days of summer with a new freshness through these 8 womens’ artworks, as they contemplate their journey through this recent period of transformation.
