ALEX BLAS
Artist Statement
In his current series, “In Your Room”, Alex Blas explores modern day life by examining the private spaces of his friends. In these paintings, Blas carefully considers the shadows, colors, textures present in these spaces, as well as the light in which they exist. Blas’ subjects are often shown in captive, pensive isolation, highlighting the fact that these works are a privileged window into personal spaces.
Blas writes of his work, “My latest series follows a theme that is central to my work, privacy and personal space. It also shares the title to one of my favorite Depeche Mode songs, “In Your Room,” which starts, ‘In your room, where time stands still, or moves at your will.’ ”
Alex Blas was born in 1978 in Mexico City and received his degree in 1999 from Santa Ana College. His work has been shown at the Lyons Weir Gallery, New York, and the George Billis Gallery, Los Angeles, as well as Manifest Equality (Los Angeles) and at Legends of La Cienega, sponsored by Elle Décor magazine. Blas currently lives and works in Northern California.
