PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE |

George Billis Gallery is pleased to introduce Shawn Huckins, a Denver-based painter whose work explores the seemingly contradictory relationship between history and technology. Introducing: Shawn Huckins, the artist’s first show with the gallery, will be on view through May 11th.
In his work, Huckins meticulously reproduces historical paintings by hand - annotating the works with current texting acronyms and digital shorthand, and obscuring the subjects with a hand-painted checkerboard pattern.
Huckins writes, "technology influences how much we know and what we believe, as well as how quickly and intelligently we convey our ideas. But does how we communicate govern the value of what we communicate? The physical act of typing very fast on small devices has undeniably impacted spelling, grammar and punctuation, encouraging a degree of illiteracy that has become the new social norm. As goes our grammatical literacy, do our social and cultural literacies follow? Are we in a continuing state of the debasement of language?"
Shawn Huckins received his BA in Studio Arts from Keene State College in 2006. His work has been featured in Hi-Fructose Magazine, Luxe Magazine, the Huffington Post, Forbes and several other publications. Huckins has received many awards and grants, including the Haven Foundation Grant in 2013, the Artists’ Fellowship Inc.’s Artist Fellowship Grant in 2012 and 2011, and was a Luxembourg Art Prize finalist in 2018. He has exhibited widely throughout the US. Huckins lives and works in Denver, Colorado.
