Michael Chearney: No Such Thing As Reality

George Billis Gallery is pleased to present the gallery's first solo exhibition of abstract paintings by Michael Chearney. The exhibition, No Such Thing As Reality, features the artist's recent work and continues through February 11th.

Chearney writes of his work, "For me, art is a living thing. My process involves great physicality, a full engagement of mind, body, and soul. The paint flies, drips, swirls, is cajoled Into its existence, its being. I have heard my pieces described as action feng shui. I feel the energy channel through me on to the canvas and beyond. There is no separation between the studio, the canvas, and my body. Once finished, the energy held in each painting continues to vibrate with the passion of the moment of its creation. With their intricate patterns and textures, and overall impressionistic overtones, the canvases suggest for me both a micro and macrocosmic view. Each pieces vibrates with its own frequency of color and its own unique non-verbal field of communication, and at the same time, as a body of work, I believe these paintings speak or "sing" as one, a meditation on interconnection and harmony.

My new work expands on this exploration of collective energy with multi-dimensional groupings of canvas, and the additional element of a resin finish on some pieces, the resin element reflecting back to us and drawing us in simultaneously, with heightened clarity and focus."

Chearney was born in Baltimore MD and currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
