ARTIST STATEMENT: Janurary 2005
It is unlikely that one would notice that my paintings are largely influenced by representational themes. After many years of painting figures in settings, it became imperative for me to reach for the pure essence of a composition. Now, though my work is executed through abstract means, the shapes and lines still hold a sort of character and personality for me.
It is important that I keep my approach spontaneous and intuitive, so I do not sketch before painting. From the moment my brush first touches the canvas or paper, a push and pull of balance begins. -I apply layers of thin oil glazes and gestural mark making, and observe the natural effects that occur. The challenge occurs as I try to hold onto the simplicity of a piece as it is built up with color on top of color, line, and pattern. Often it is the art of subtraction that reveals the most effective result.
