FUMIO REN ADACHI
Artist Statement

In creating Natural, I strive for a unification of objective and subjective phenomena, as in Zen Buddhism.
This has been my experience
since my childhood in Japan. This unification is a familiar significant topic for artists in the East, the artists themselves being the subjective, using various materials for the objective. The fusing together of subjective and objective in this way seems impossible in Western Culture.
I now use molten glass, gold and platinum foils for creating the Natural. I don’t control them at will but allow them to work by themselves uniquely and interestingly. During the creation of a piece, I imagine myself on the plane of the materials, as an equal to them. I admit and accept the nature of the materials, which result in spontaneously changing patterns of melted gold or platinum foils on highly heated molten glass.
The concept of  “compassion” in Buddhism includes no discrimination between human being and other beings or even inanimate objects, and so, no conquering of others, but instead harmonizing with them.

It is my hope for my piece to inspire in the viewer reconsideration of what human beings have been on earth and what they should be in the future.
