hen I paint and construct, I try to create a visual articulation of the motion and emotion contained in color.
I respond to colors in the environment, patterns of green fields over Switzerland, the unending sky in New Mexico, natural pigments in Lily’s, the contrasting tones of honey. It is the discrete gradation in hues, the simplicity and expansiveness of color that I am drawn to.
Some of my work is emblematic of architecture, composed of geometric forms and defined structure. While others are inspired by nature and take on an organic, free hand sensibility.
Each piece is an exploration of color, with patterns of varying weights and rhythms, that is intended to evoke the perception of breathing or pulsing.
I find painting necessary, not necessary like breathing -| I wouldn’t die if I stopped painting. Rather, necessary like getting out of bed in the morning -| life wouldn’t be as lovely or as rich if I didn’t do it.
