KALANI engles

ARTIST’S STATEMENT:

My abstract paintings and monotypes are based on things I have seen, heard, smelled or felt, often while traveling. The colors, shapes, mood and composition of my work are extracted from sensory experience, translated into feelings, and recreated from emotional memory, with painterly discipline and technique, months or sometimes years later. My work represents the tangible world, interpreted by my subconscious, rather than pure idea or emotion. In this sense I am a painter of inner landscapes that parallel the outer world, which I want the viewer to feel as well as see.

In my Perfume River series, I imagine what this Vietnamese stream might have looked like decades ago when its banks were lined with fruit orchards above the imperial city of Hué. In the springtime when the orchards were in bloom, the petals from the flowers would fall into the river and float down through the city. So abundant were the flowers that the river gave off the scent of perfume.
