JUDITH NILSON

ARTIST’S STATEMENT:

My work is intuitive. It develops through impulse, memory, and the subconscious. My mark making is not representative of anything or anyone. My art is representative of my imagination. Sometimes simple and direct, other times busy and dissonant; the markings have no set way of emerging.

I begin with a structured visual idea, a circle, a square, a rectangle. The random quality develops out of that structure intuitively through touch and gesture. No line is exactly alike. Through random repetition, the structure of the vocabulary evolves into an animated narrative, forming my own personal language of color and markings.

Within each series, markings are explored until worked through, providing an ever-changing environment for the viewers to bring themselves into the work.
