his new series of works - The Situation Sequence - is a culmination of three years of painting and drawing depicting the figure in a variety of urban scenarios. They are glimpses or vignettes of our modern day fragmented existence. These pictures follow the tradition of classical painting transformed into a contemporary avant garde context. The figures portray a solid inner serenity and calm in contrast to the energised space they occupy. The settings for these figures are abstract interiors or exteriors and the colours balance the figures to create a cohesive energised space. Some of the figures are enveloped in colours that suggest the lyrical light of California or the contrasting urban settings of London or New York City. The two main paintings in the sequence are "Music" and "The Room"."Music" is set in the visually dramatic energy of New York City where the location is an abstract impression of Central Park. The protagonist represented by the musician is involved in the highly charged exhilarating and vigorous act of playing the guitar and serenading his muse. In the painting titled "The Room" the figure of an artist gazes at his model who reclines on a couch in a hotel room in L.A. where the walls reflect the atmosphere and light experience of Southern California. This is a room where the artist is inspired to create; where the canvases are lined up ready to work on. The variations of reds and pinks convey the bright vibrant light that reflects the energy and inspiration experienced in the moment of creation. In both paintings, these figures are involved in private encounters; they are in there own situation confronting the world and contemplating the human condition. |
