Randomness, or chance elements, operate in an opposite direction from free will, choice, or decision. I have begun to experience an increased awareness of the process of chance in my own work. Using the intrinsic forces of gravity and the sweep of my arm (pours and gestures), I am allowing the paint itself to arrive at its own image in a way that is new for me. The element of control is monitored by preparation -- what colors, how big, what direction of mark -- but the final outcome is determined largely by the qualities endemic to the materials. I find I am surprised by the appearance of the works at first, as if some strange, lost relations had come to visit, and then unpacked their bags for a long stay. says Mockler.
The paintings and works on paper rely on primary and tertiary color schemes. The work is large in scale, and the process becomes visible as an activated field as Mockler sweeps paint across the canvas.
Andrew Mockler received his M.F.A. from Yale University and his B.F.A. from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. This is the third solo exhibition for the artist at George Billis Gallery.
